Motivation is optional

Someone great once said, “You don’t have to feel like doing something to get it done.”

I had to read that a couple of times to let that sink in.

I have always looked for motivation whenever I wanted to do something but did not feel like. “I should go to the gym – but I don’t feel like going”. “I should make that presentation now – but I don’t feel like doing it”. “I should fold those clothes now – but I don’t feel like doing it.”

Today, I decided to do it anyway. I went to the gym anyway. I made that presentation anyway. And I feel much better having done it.

I simply acknowledged the feeling of not wanting to do it. But I did it anyway.

In hindsight, the feeling of not wanting to do it, and the fact that I did it anyway – coexisted. So if they can coexist, I don’t need to look for motivation anymore. Phew.

P. S. I should really fold the clothes now, but I don’t fee
